In the red — a teaser

Overwhelmed not only me, but my camera!

What a sight, what a task …

Organized by brand.

Once I get my hands on some sticks, I’ll swatch first by brand, then move the sticks around by shade as I have them in my drawer.

Yes, that drawer is on the verge of collapse! 🙂

Can never do these bottles justice.  They’re so much more beautiful in person.

Chanel Dragon, Coromandel, Lotus Rouge, Barcelona Red

Deborah Lippmann Sexyback, It’s Raining Men, Girls Jessa

More Mavala reds on the way from Canada, and I’ve since realized I forgot to raid my Asian drawer for the above photos …

Comparisons: Essie Spring 2016 Lounge Lover

I went about creating this post rather cinematically, albeit without the luxury of a lighting budget + skilled technicians 🙂

It was kind of cool to do things out of order (confusing even myself in the process), then having it all pan out in the end.

SONY DSC

The titles 🙂

Last night, I developed the concept around the main actors and chose the supporting roles and bit parts.

This morning, I wrote the script, devoted myself to hair, makeup and stage direction, while haphazardly location scouting wherever I could find (barely) sufficient light.

Then, very out of character, I swiftly and decisively chose the set: my March Birchbox, gift from a thoughtful friend.

Scene One:  Essie Poolside Service, Nails Inc. Green Park, Kiko 346, RBL The Mosses Mar

All, 2x

Scene Two:  Kiko 347, Essie Off Tropic, Nails Inc. Bruton Mews, RBL Recycle

All, 2x

Nails Inc. Bruton Mews is jelly-ish at first coat, a la Nars Zulu.  She’s wearing two here.

The bridge between the two scenes:

Deborah Lippmann Girls – Hannah, Floss Gloss Faded, ChG Take a Hike, RBL Orbis Non Sufficit

All, 2x.

Hannah, third from left, is much sheerer than her sisters at the first coat.

She’s cushy and crelly, while Floss Gloss Faded (fourth from left) is darker and opaque at one coat (but I gave her two).

The cast thus far, from left:

Essie – Poolside Service

Nails Inc. – Green Park

Kiko 346

RBL The Mosses Mar

DL Girls – Hannah

Floss Gloss – Faded

China Glaze – Take a Hike

RBL Orbis Non Sufficit

Kiko 347

Essie – Off Tropic

Nails Inc. – Bruton Mews

RBL Recycle

My original intent was to sandwich the two principal actors and their scenes with a couple of doppelganger Scherer CQ varnishes:  Corduroy and Slate.

Above:

1 – Scherer CQ Corduroy, 3x – thin first coat, then load brush for *each stroke* on 2nd and 3rd coats

2 – Essie Poolside Service, 2x

3 – Nails Inc. Green Park, 2x

4 – Kiko 346, 2x

5 – RBL The Mosses Mar, 2x

However, Slate’s agent informed that she was temporarily indisposed and rained in at the varnish warehouse.

So I called on another readily available drugstore varnish to read for Slate on the tail end:  Sinful Colors Calypso.

Calypso leans bluer than Slate, and is opaque at one coat.

1 – China Glaze Take a Hike, 2x

2 – RBL Orbis Non Sufficit, 2x

3 – Kiko 347, 2x

4 – Essie Off Tropic, 2x

5 – Nails Inc. Bruton Mews, 2x

6 – RBL Recycle, 2x

7 – Sinful Colors Calypso, 1x

Essie Poolside Service is second from left, starting from greens.

Essie Off Tropic is fourth from right, starting from greens.

Inspiration: The Sartorialist in Bologna, Italia

Remember how four years ago ’round this season, we were scrambling for Chanel Mimosa?

Photo by The Sartorialist, Mr. Scott Schuman.  Molto grazie!

Over here in California, I was planning on showing you some new greens.

By the time I finished arranging and rearranging all one zillion of them, however, I viscerally understood the meaning of the phrase, familiarity breeds contempt.

So I turned to a long-neglected basket of yellows for relief from my green weariness, thinking to organize and photograph them for sale somewhere, as a lot.

Instead, I very unexpectedly discovered a *new* colour crush.

I even went out to the varnish warehouse (my garage) and plucked up the few yellow bottles languishing there…

Beginning at high noon, these are the colours (all, 2x) featured in the rest of the images:

1 – The Face Shop YL701

2 – NYC Mimosa Bouquet

3 – Sinful Colors Otaku Anime

4 – L.A. Girls Fruity Zesty Citrus

5 – SH CSM Mum’s the Word

6 – Revlon Colorstay Buttercup

7 – NARS x Pierre Hardy – Sharks Left

8 – American Apparel Butter

9 – SH Xtreme Wear Teeny Bikini

10 – SH CSM Yellow Kitty  (at 6:00)

11 – CQ Honey

12 – Sally Girl Banana

13 – H&M Rising Sun

Sally Girl and H&M have shimmer; SC Pull Over does not…

…but Sinful Colors Let’s Meet does.  Essence C&G is the only true crème in this batch.

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

SH CSM Mum’s the Word, farthest left above, had the smoothest formula and best coverage in two coats of all of these (could be because it’s the newest).

Because of Mum’s the Word, I skipped Dior Sunwashed.

I’ve used my P&J Summer 2015 Sangria as a sheer top coat over Mum’s the Word in lieu of Dior Tie Dye top coat over Sunwashed…

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

SH CSM Yellow Kitty was the first yellow varnish I had ever purchased, way back in 2010.

I remember having my eye on it as early as 2009, and I wasn’t even aware that Pantone had deemed Mimosa colour of the year for 2009.

Swatching it today was the first time I’ve opened the bottle, so it performed exceedingly well, all things considered!

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

NYC Mimosa Bouquet is my favourite shade of this shimmery batch, but it’s not basking in the glow of the winner’s circle.

Streaky, patchy, sheer, in spite of its beautiful pale glimmer, which I thought would help matters along…

Según tú, yo soy la mala…

I’m a bad girl. Should I place the blame on the siren songs of CQ 543 Rustic Dream and 544 Idyllic?

These two were en route from my varnish warehouse (the garage) to being packed up and sent off as a gift to Norma (who I owe big time since way before this post) for her generosity in adding SH Concrete and Mystic Lilac, among other beautiful items, to my manicuratorial coffers last year.

But they stopped me in my tracks. I walked into the house, put away the shipping supplies momentarily, and grabbed my iPhone.

CQ Rustic Dream and Idyllic might have to pit stop a short while longer here at the café before I reluctantly send them on their way to a new owner.

Is it all my fault for being selfish and covetous, or is the tempting lure of these little bottles (no longer being sold in U.S. drugstores) really too hard to resist?

Multichrome Comparison Library, Volume VIII: copyright Autumn 2014

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

No. 10 is G-gal Red *Night* Sky Brilliant.  It’s so difficult for me to correct spacing and text once I botch it in my primitive labeling program…

I’ve performed a similar comparison here, but have since inadvertently permanently deleted the photos in an attempt to free up space.  Quite all right, since the present comparison has more members, with better images!

SONY DSC

L’Apogee Optico Ambar, which I will also feature in a multichrome topper post (dreading this task since I loathe swatching over black, and in fact have never done it).

SONY DSC

Revlon Spiderman LE from Summer 2014, 1000 Volts.  This was an amazing (lol) collection of duo/multichromes.

SONY DSC

L’Oreal The Temptress’ Power.  Think this is LE from Fall 2012 (?).

SONY DSC

Sally Hansen Lustre Shine Firefly.  I purchased this long ago at full price when this series first showed up on shelves.  Although I see them ’round deeply discounted, I still think they’re underrated — the two I’ve featured here I find especially beautiful.

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

Above and below, Color Club Wild & Willing.  I have never gotten round to putting lots of coats of this under a royal purple shatter for Hallowe’en…

SONY DSC

…maybe for All Souls’ Day, or in time for Dia de los Muertos?

SONY DSC

CQ Rustic Dream.  Now this is one gorgeous varnish.  Gotta try her under purple crackle as well…

SONY DSC

F21 L&B Amber, another 1970s-esque stunner.

Impala Disco Sex Appeal, aka the little lava lamp on display in my bedroom.

Yes, an even better dupe for MAC Bad Fairy than Claire’s Poison Apple, which I forgot to include here.

New in: hope you always stay the same, don’t ever change…

SONY DSC

Yes, I already have Karl Says Tres Chic from the old Ultimate Nudes collection!  But this one looks different, and I also bought the other two that debuted with no. 57 a few seasons ago, 56 Minter Wonderland and 58 Meet Me a Paris.

SONY DSC

I want all the other varnishes from the Une, Deux, Trois LE.  But I buy them from Spain, and shipping is *so* expensive.

SONY DSC

SH CSM Himalaya, from the Fall 2014 Prabal Gurung collaboration, and a gem I pulled from the varnish warehouse (my garage), CQ Vintage…

SONY DSC

Bonita Florence (has a beautiful glassfleck-y shimmer) and OPI Have a Tempura Tan-trum

SONY DSC

Rimmel Kate Moss Soul Session, DL Modern Love, unnamed gorgeous Orly bought in a duo from a discount retailer.

SONY DSC

Ulta Set the Nude, Spoiled Only in Creams, unnamed gorgeous Orly bought in a duo from a discount retailer.

SONY DSC

Orly Highlight, Petites Color Fever Vintage Gray (recently rescued from my garage), NYX Girls The Taupe (bottle arrived to me discolored), WnW matte Distressed to Impress.  The cap on this WnW matte is so invitingly tactile, I can’t stop stroking its rubbery smoothness, lol…

SONY DSC

Both of these I obtained just last night, free!  I buy so much nail polish at a drugstore chain that they gave me a sheaf of unexpected coupons and discounts when I had just stopped in to browse at a particular locale.  Of course I made a beeline for the small OPI selection only available at this location.  There were quite a few temptations in that realm, but many of them are other gals’ lemmings, not mine, and I’ve allowed myself lately to be influenced by outside ideas over my own preferences and intuition.  I’ve ditched a great many of my own backlogged manicure ideas in order to try out things I see online and in nail magazines.  They inevitably don’t turn out as well as they do in the images, and I ignore my own inner voice instructing me that this or that colour or technique would work much better for me personally than what I’m reading…

So I put the handfuls of OPI bottles back on the shelf, and chose these two Essies from a recent collection.  Namely, because I can’t purchase Essie from a beauty supply shop at a discount, as I do with OPI, and the discount retailers won’t get these Essie shades until this time next year…

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

I went out to my varnish warehouse (the garage) in order to fulfill a current exchange, and unexpectedly found these two Sinful Colors just begging to be put in a lineup with my new Essie bottles.

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

Then, I realized that Mind Your Mittens, recently acquired from a discount retailer, would also fit nicely here.  It’s a bit bluer than the rest, but if you park it next to an actual blue, it reads green.

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

If I were to go through my buckets, boxes, drawers and shelves, I would surely find an abundance of similar varnishes to complicate things further.  For the sake of simplicity,  I leave you with these hopefully uncluttered bottle tableaux of few rather than (too) many…
