Inspiration: Spring clean

Marni F/W 2017-2018

Just cos I’m always delighted, surprised and inspired by Italian houses’ juxtaposition of colour and texture

The shelf containing a fraction of my collection, which took an enormous chunk of afternoon to clean, mix and reorganize.

Desire is an invasive and unreasonable motivator.

Early last summer, I had lined up all of the above and below in order to convince myself that I did NOT need, nor need to buy, the China Glazes, Essies, NARS or L.A. Girl …

… that I obviously ended up buying anyway. 🙂

Maybelline Be Scene in Green

Ulta, GOSH and Maybelline were originally shown in this post, but those photos suffered the same ignominious fate as my other early efforts …

Dear BB, may you look back on your summer surf excursions with the same bittersweet nostalgia I feel upon plucking these oceanic beauties from their drawer … when every trip to the drugstore was an absolute delight, as the market was exploding with multichromes several years back — just as I had lost my job with scarce to no pocket money to spend on these little bottles of liquid gems. Fortunately, I had made wonderful international connections via a shared varnish passion, and many generous ladies granted my every wish and more. In spite of my long spell of unemployment, I had begun to fill my treasure chest with gifts of multi-coloured jewels, which I now share with a small world of like-minded souls. Your tribe is out there awaiting your return to the shared element, my love.

I don’t know if you’re meant to do this after purchase, but I do it with most of my NR varnishes, even with the Color Waltz line that initially bears its sticky li’l nametag on the long, grooved stem.

Of course a normal person already possessing the similar Korean mates above would not have purchased any of these Play varnishes from the Etude House website, even at $2 USD a go…

But I am long past normal by now, and was relieved to spot enough variation among compatriot bottles to justify my order.  🙂

SONY DSC

I’m still nuts about this Play line of varnishes, especially many of the seasonal collections that are not to be found on the Etude House U.S. site.  For those, I will have to head to the auction site.

But no. 25 arrived leaky, with almost half the content having drained into the cap and seeping and drying caked in the space between cap and bottle.

In order to cynically make myself laugh (rather than cry in frustration to find myself doing this yet again with a varnish order gone awry), as I patiently salvaged this gorgeous colour by pouring the mess back into the bottle best I could (it’s up to the top of the P in Play now!) and dousing the lot with acetone, I told myself these varnishes were total misnomers and should have been deemed Work…

Additionally, it is a lot of Work to find names for these Play varnishes. I did not do the Net research this go-round, nor was I able to find out why some Play labels bear a P and others a J…

Photo belongs to Hanatsuki blog.  Thank you!

I have really tried to get my paws on Smelly varnishes, but Japanese mail and package services will not ship nail varnish out of Japan, in spite of my having successfully navigated the Urban Research web site and managing to fill my online shopping cart with a selection of lovely Smelly bottles.

Grrr…

So I bought Revlon Colorstay Hold ‘Em to tide me over.  In real life, it looks very close to Hanatsuki’s image above.

RBL Forgiveness (they sent me a new bottle to replace the broken but “rescued” one)

EL Insatiable (The varnish to end all varnishes.  I don’t know where my eyeballs were when this came out, but I only recently discovered it and of course had to have it.  I obtained it for a great price on the auction site, from a seller in Germany who sent it to me completely unsecured in a basic file envelope, half falling out of its beaten-up-by-the-international-postal-service box, but still intact and unbroken.  The flimsy unpadded envelope also had “nail polish” listed on the customs label, so I’m relieved and grateful I even have it to show to you here!)

Color Club Shabby Drab.  Been seeing lots of images of this lately and every time I do, I think, gotta get that one…

Of course I already have it, untried among my scads of dusty greyed blurples.

Givenchy Lilas d’Exception.  Truly an exceptional varnish, and difficult to photograph accurately enough to do justice to its beauty.

And below we have the outliers I had originally chosen for the above lineups.

They were either too bright, too blue, too red, too saturated, too dusty, too something to be featured above, yet still all kinds of gorge in their own right.
