Below, the back story.

Desire is an invasive and unreasonable motivator.

Early last summer, I had lined up all of the above and below in order to convince myself that I did NOT need, nor need to buy, the China Glazes, Essies, NARS or L.A. Girl …

… that I obviously ended up buying anyway. 🙂

Inspiration: The Sartorialist in Bologna, Italia

Remember how four years ago ’round this season, we were scrambling for Chanel Mimosa?

71514Yellow6B2489Web

Photo by The Sartorialist, Mr. Scott Schuman.  Molto grazie!

Over here in California, I was planning on showing you some new greens.

By the time I finished arranging and rearranging all one zillion of them, however, I viscerally understood the meaning of the phrase, familiarity breeds contempt.

So I turned to a long-neglected basket of yellows for relief from my green weariness, thinking to organize and photograph them for sale somewhere, as a lot.

Instead, I very unexpectedly discovered a *new* colour crush.

I even went out to the varnish warehouse (my garage) and plucked up the few yellow bottles languishing there…

Beginning at high noon, these are the colours (all, 2x) featured in the rest of the images:

1 – The Face Shop YL701

2 – NYC Mimosa Bouquet

3 – Sinful Colors Otaku Anime

4 – L.A. Girls Fruity Zesty Citrus

5 – SH CSM Mum’s the Word

6 – Revlon Colorstay Buttercup

7 – NARS x Pierre Hardy – Sharks Left

8 – American Apparel Butter

9 – SH Xtreme Wear Teeny Bikini

10 – SH CSM Yellow Kitty  (at 6:00)

11 – CQ Honey

12 – Sally Girl Banana

13 – H&M Rising Sun

14 – Sinful Colors Pull Over

15 – Sinful Colors Let’s Meet

16 – Essence C&G Little Miss Sunrise

17 – Essence Cherry Blossom Girl TE Fortune Cookie

18 – Catrice Yellow Sub-mandarin

Sally Girl and H&M have shimmer; SC Pull Over does not…

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

…but Sinful Colors Let’s Meet does.  Essence C&G is the only true crème in this batch.

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

SH CSM Mum’s the Word, farthest left above, had the smoothest formula and best coverage in two coats of all of these (could be because it’s the newest).

Because of Mum’s the Word, I skipped Dior Sunwashed.

I’ve used my P&J Summer 2015 Sangria as a sheer top coat over Mum’s the Word in lieu of Dior Tie Dye top coat over Sunwashed…

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

SH CSM Yellow Kitty was the first yellow varnish I had ever purchased, way back in 2010.

I remember having my eye on it as early as 2009, and I wasn’t even aware that Pantone had deemed Mimosa colour of the year for 2009.

Swatching it today was the first time I’ve opened the bottle, so it performed exceedingly well, all things considered!

NYC Mimosa Bouquet is my favourite shade of this shimmery batch, but it’s not basking in the glow of the winner’s circle.

Streaky, patchy, sheer, in spite of its beautiful pale glimmer, which I thought would help matters along…

Box of bonbons, part one

Intended for Valentine’s Day, so a little overdue…

Meanwhile, lunch is served at the café, before we partake in some dessert-like varnishes!

Baked tofu gratin over Thai jasmine rice.

Other kitchen sink ingredients include uncured pastrami, shaved broccoli stalks and carrot, organic tofu, Japanese kokumaro stew cream, artisanal bacon cheddar cheese, French fleur de sel.

I was absolutely smitten by these two SH CSM varnishes from the new NYFW collection.

When I brought them home together last week, I had no idea they would be so close to OPI and Essie…

Ugh, I’m stuffed!

This post took forever (way past Valentine’s Day, yes?) to put together, and the display of sweets isn’t over yet — I omitted Essie Cashmere Matte Wrap Me Up from the Vanilla Buttercream lineup, so will include her in part two, where I’ll swatch and compare the assortments above.

The Skinfood trio set also deserves its own post and commentary — después de haberme desempalagado (after getting rid of this sickeningly sweet feeling). 🙂

Comparisons: Ain’t No Sunshine

SONY DSC

Not saving the best for last, in order to get your attention without alluding directly to the 50 SoG movie adaptation tie-in hype.

First obliquely referenced here, a couple of years ago…

…but actually an addendum to this post, from a couple of months ago.

These are all of the greys I have acquired from December 2014-January 2015, post-post. 🙂

SONY DSC

All swatches shown are 2 coats each.

Aux Chandelles is semi-matte, with a sort of lustre to keep it from looking flat.  Very subtle and unique.

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

Skull & Glossbones is rather sheer and jelly-ish, a yellowed bone grey in comparison to the others.  I included it here solely because I spent the latter part of 2014 filling gaps in my collection, and certain members of the OPI Pirates of the Caribbean collection were indeed coveted and lacking, due to lingering swapper’s remorse…

Next up, below, stormier greys:

SONY DSC

I acquired GOSH and NARS due to Ommorphia Beauty Bar’s waxing poetic about this duo.  No regrets. 🙂

China Glaze Out Like A Light applies much, much darker than the bottle color.  The same thing happened with Zoya Dove in 2011, reason why I gave her away and never repurchased.

SONY DSC

Here’s a mid-point recap:

1 – no varnish

2 – H&M Urban Girl

3 – L’Oreal Aux Chandelles, semi-matte

4 – OPI Skull & Glossbones, sheer warmer-leaning crelly

5 – China Glaze Pelican Grey, microshimmer

6 – OPI Cement the Deal

7 – Barry M GHS Chai

8 – OPI Embrace the Grey

9 – Barry M Grey

10 – GOSH Miss Grey

SONY DSC

Above and below, the bluer-leaning greys.  My favorite of these lineups.

SONY DSC

Wet Suit is a wee hair lighter than Office Polish-tics.  Since Office Polish-tics is harder to come by for most, Wet Suit is current in the Sally Hansen Triple Shine display in the U.S., and a great stand-in for this variation on MAC Blue India.

SONY DSC

Misa Office Polish-tics is much more beautiful than she appears in these images.  I ordered about 25 Misa bottles from the company website late last year; it was truly one of the most pleasing parcels I’ve received of late.

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

L’Oreal Grey Corset is matte, and much more muted than it appears in the image above.  It looks stormy dark grey-blue indoors.

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

See what I mean about Grey Corset?  Wow!

Seriously, L’Oreal has created a very unique collection around this theme.

I didn’t like any of the L’Oreal varnishes at the first coat, or even the second, until they were fully dry.  That’s when they best manifest their unique finishes.

SONY DSC

These are the glitters I chose from the respective 50 SoG collections.

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

L to R:  Misa Office Polish-tics, L’Oreal Grey Corset, OPI Shine for Me, L’Oreal Bad Bad Grey.

Bad Bad Grey is a texture/sand/sugar glitter.

I must warn you, it looks like gloppy lava on the first wet coat.  I was so disappointed, and already plotting how to get rid of it.

At two coats, dry and in low light, it still isn’t as attractive as in that first bottle shot at the beginning of this post.

But it has something else when the light hits it, a kind of mystique.  Although the sugary glitter looks predominantly pink and coppery-gold above, there is a veritable (albeit subtle) finely-ground rainbow, including silver, in the mix.  Truly complex and mind-blowing.

I find the L’Oreal collection to be much more original than OPI’s; I could easily return the trio of OPI I selected with no qualms…

Since it proved difficult to determine which of the images above was the most helpful, I give you them all. 🙂

Starting from and excluding the non-varnished chip, order is as follows:

1 – H&M Urban Girl

2 – L’Oreal Aux Chandelles

3 – OPI Skull & Glossbones

4 – China Glaze Pelican Grey

5 – OPI Cement the Deal

6 – Barry M GHS Chai

7 – OPI Embrace the Grey

8 – Barry M Grey

9 – GOSH Miss Grey

10 –  NARS Storm Bird

11 – China Glaze Out Like A Light

12 – Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Show Steel-er

13 – Sally Hansen Triple Shine Wet Suit

14 – Misa Office Polish-tics

15 – L’Oreal Grey Corset

16 – OPI Shine for Me

17 – L’Oreal Bad Bad Grey

Niña rica, niña pobre…

…o bien, pobre niña rica?

Rich girl, poor girl… or rather, poor little rich girl?

In varnish, that is!

This post was so popular among café patrons that I thought to make it a regular feature, ja?

I’ll begin with the minimal NARS I’ve recently acquired as a springboard, and take it from there, for your viewing pleasure.

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

NARS Kalmynos, $20 USD at Sephora, purchased November 2014

Sally Hansen CSM 370 I Lilac You, $2 USD on drugstore seasonal clearance, purchased December 2014

Please keep in mind that the varnishes in this series are not carefully selected for closest match among high-end and low-end in my overflowing collection; rather, they are current examples of how I as a shopper am a creature of habit and preference when it comes to shades and finishes, no matter the price point.

Also, the varnishes I’ve shown you thus far are culled from my most recent acquisitions (in the past couple of months I have gone even more hog wild than usual… or not, lol).

Hopefully my bottle duplicity will (1) best case scenario, come in handy or (2) worst case scenario, entertain!

Rich girl, poor girl

Does such economic disparity even exist in my varnish collection? Lol! You tell me…

SONY DSC

Purchased November 2014, Sephora

SONY DSC

Purchased January 2015, during today’s drugstore jaunt.  Yup, totally deja vu.

SONY DSC

NARS Thasos, $20 USD.  Revlon Brilliant Strength Entice, on clearance for $2 USD.

SONY DSC

NARS Zakynthos, $20 USD.  Sally Hansen Insta-Dri 114 In Nude-tral, $5 USD.

Ever since I missed out on Dior Camel (and the seller I purchased her from much, much later dropped and broke the bottle during packing), I’ve been amassing unheard of amounts of what I consider potential lookalikes to compensate for my loss. :/

SONY DSC

NARS Manosque, $20 USD. Sally Hansen Insta-Dri 310 Slick Slate, $5 USD.

I can never pass up a purply greige, no matter the price.  I’ve stocked an entire varnish drawer based solely on this theme with variations…
