NOPI Mer-maid for Each Other (swatched with next batch on separate nail wheel since I ran out of chips)

Initially shown here, but I had inadvertently deleted the photos due to running out of space and not knowing I could purchase more :/

All swatches are two coats.

I’ll label the above photos soon, when I’m not so tired out!

Maybelline Be Scene in Green

Ulta, GOSH and Maybelline were originally shown in this post, but those photos suffered the same ignominious fate as my other early efforts …

Dear BB, may you look back on your summer surf excursions with the same bittersweet nostalgia I feel upon plucking these oceanic beauties from their drawer … when every trip to the drugstore was an absolute delight, as the market was exploding with multichromes several years back — just as I had lost my job with scarce to no pocket money to spend on these little bottles of liquid gems. Fortunately, I had made wonderful international connections via a shared varnish passion, and many generous ladies granted my every wish and more. In spite of my long spell of unemployment, I had begun to fill my treasure chest with gifts of multi-coloured jewels, which I now share with a small world of like-minded souls. Your tribe is out there awaiting your return to the shared element, my love.

PFF Series: Oil slick rainbow complex gold microshimmers

Estee Lauder Explosif, NOPI For Gold Times’ Sake, GOSH Galaxy

Methinks all three came out in 2012 …

These are among my most prized varnishes.

I have a backup of NOPI, obtained in swap.

Explosif is the most gold-green, leaning lighter and seemingly more finely ground than the other two.

NOPI was my first of the three, and still my favourite.

GOSH Galaxy is one of the most gorgeous varnishes I’ve ever laid eyes on.

Galaxy seems a mite grainier than NOPI, in my estimation.

3x each

You don’t need all three, surely.  But if you have none, then you do need at least one!

One must be careful what she wishes for, especially when in the vicinity of a discount retailer.

Just found four items this afternoon that have been on my radar, for $4 USD each.  Essie Vested Interest was one.

Intended for Valentine’s Day, so a little overdue…

Meanwhile, lunch is served at the café, before we partake in some dessert-like varnishes!

I was absolutely smitten by these two SH CSM varnishes from the new NYFW collection.

When I brought them home together last week, I had no idea they would be so close to OPI and Essie…

Ugh, I’m stuffed!

This post took forever (way past Valentine’s Day, yes?) to put together, and the display of sweets isn’t over yet — I omitted Essie Cashmere Matte Wrap Me Up from the Vanilla Buttercream lineup, so will include her in part two, where I’ll swatch and compare the assortments above.

The Skinfood trio set also deserves its own post and commentary — después de haberme desempalagado (after getting rid of this sickeningly sweet feeling). 🙂

SONY DSC

Not saving the best for last, in order to get your attention without alluding directly to the 50 SoG movie adaptation tie-in hype.

First obliquely referenced here, a couple of years ago…

…but actually an addendum to this post, from a couple of months ago.

These are all of the greys I have acquired from December 2014-January 2015, post-post. 🙂

SONY DSC

All swatches shown are 2 coats each.

Aux Chandelles is semi-matte, with a sort of lustre to keep it from looking flat.  Very subtle and unique.

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

Skull & Glossbones is rather sheer and jelly-ish, a yellowed bone grey in comparison to the others.  I included it here solely because I spent the latter part of 2014 filling gaps in my collection, and certain members of the OPI Pirates of the Caribbean collection were indeed coveted and lacking, due to lingering swapper’s remorse…

I acquired GOSH and NARS due to Ommorphia Beauty Bar’s waxing poetic about this duo.  No regrets. 🙂

China Glaze Out Like A Light applies much, much darker than the bottle color.  The same thing happened with Zoya Dove in 2011, reason why I gave her away and never repurchased.

SONY DSC

Here’s a mid-point recap:

1 – no varnish

2 – H&M Urban Girl

3 – L’Oreal Aux Chandelles, semi-matte

4 – OPI Skull & Glossbones, sheer warmer-leaning crelly

5 – China Glaze Pelican Grey, microshimmer

6 – OPI Cement the Deal

7 – Barry M GHS Chai

8 – OPI Embrace the Grey

9 – Barry M Grey

10 – GOSH Miss Grey

SONY DSC

Above and below, the bluer-leaning greys.  My favorite of these lineups.

SONY DSC

Wet Suit is a wee hair lighter than Office Polish-tics.  Since Office Polish-tics is harder to come by for most, Wet Suit is current in the Sally Hansen Triple Shine display in the U.S., and a great stand-in for this variation on MAC Blue India.

SONY DSC

Misa Office Polish-tics is much more beautiful than she appears in these images.  I ordered about 25 Misa bottles from the company website late last year; it was truly one of the most pleasing parcels I’ve received of late.

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

L’Oreal Grey Corset is matte, and much more muted than it appears in the image above.  It looks stormy dark grey-blue indoors.

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

See what I mean about Grey Corset?  Wow!

Seriously, L’Oreal has created a very unique collection around this theme.

I didn’t like any of the L’Oreal varnishes at the first coat, or even the second, until they were fully dry.  That’s when they best manifest their unique finishes.

SONY DSC

These are the glitters I chose from the respective 50 SoG collections.

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

SONY DSC

L to R:  Misa Office Polish-tics, L’Oreal Grey Corset, OPI Shine for Me, L’Oreal Bad Bad Grey.

Bad Bad Grey is a texture/sand/sugar glitter.

I must warn you, it looks like gloppy lava on the first wet coat.  I was so disappointed, and already plotting how to get rid of it.

At two coats, dry and in low light, it still isn’t as attractive as in that first bottle shot at the beginning of this post.

But it has something else when the light hits it, a kind of mystique.  Although the sugary glitter looks predominantly pink and coppery-gold above, there is a veritable (albeit subtle) finely-ground rainbow, including silver, in the mix.  Truly complex and mind-blowing.

I find the L’Oreal collection to be much more original than OPI’s; I could easily return the trio of OPI I selected with no qualms…

Since it proved difficult to determine which of the images above was the most helpful, I give you them all. 🙂

Silver Holos #14

L to R:

1 – Essence Special Effect Topper Hello Holo! – Largest glitter particles of the bunch. Makes scattered and linear holo depending on light.

2 – Catrice Million Styles Have An Ice Day – Superfine glitter top coat, finer but denser than China Glaze Fairy Dust (not pictured here).

3 – Icing by Claire’s Sugar Coated – Fine gritty sugar crystals. Primarily pink-mauve, sky blue-turquoise and rainbow holo glitters in a clear base. Really interesting ad hoc. Appears to have a taupe-ish base in the bottle a la Sation Holiday Spirit, but it’s just the density of the glitter…

4 – F21 Love & Beauty Silver – Super duper fine and dense, much denser than either Catrice MS or NOPI Make a Comet-ment. Very, very pretty and acquired on sale for $1 USD!

5 – Nicole by OPI Make a Comet-ment – My favorite since forever, the only silver holo/holo glitter I wear regularly. Subtle and scattered.

6 – OPI Paris Couture for Sure – Pre-owned and a real mess, though worth the gunky bottle cleanup. I dropped the dried-up stuff back into the bottle, hoping it will dissolve into additional holo! Larger glitter particles than is usual for a top coat. Since this is almost opaque and makes an obvious linear holo at 2-3 coats, as many have said before me, might be best worn alone.

7 – alelvi123’s silver holo top coat – now THIS is a silver holo top coat. Smooth, sheer, linear holo. Brava!

8 – 17 Holo Silver – Nice! Most opaque of the lot. Subtle linear holo.

9 – Hits No Olimpo Artemis – Reminds me of a freshly waxed and highly polished spaceship.

10 – Layla Mercury Twilight – Not as holo as Gosh 549 and grainier than Hits, but my personal treasure due to having given up lunch and dinner in order to buy her at a deep discount, last one on shelf!

11 – Sation Holiday Spirit – Transparent taupe base with large holo glitter. I own two bottles in case of emergency. Looks gorgeous on its own at one coat.

12 – Gosh 549 Holographic – No words. Behold the majestic flame of the holo-est of holographic nail lacquers. Almost powdery texture never fails to remind me of model paint.
