Collections: Sinful Colors Kylie + Sinful Shine King Kylie

When these collections appeared last year, I remember being absolutely enchanted by North Star first, then picking up a smattering of others here and there whenever popping into Walgreens. Later, I found a few bottles heavily discounted at Target, and was really surprised by the defacement of the display for this collection. Insults and ugliness, left in nail varnish and ink, directed at Miss Jenner. Whatever her reputation among the target (and Target, lol) demographic for her cosmetics, my opinion of her collaboration is sky-high. So much so that when I came upon scads of half-price bottles at a different well-stocked Walgreens locale, I shopped to my nails’ content. No regrets; here’s what I have.

These four are Trend Matters Angel shimmer mattes:

Twenty-six bottles in all.

Unsure how many comprised the collections; I’m not fan enough to do intensive Internet homework so it was difficult to decipher on my own what was what in order to break down what I had.

Since I had initially filled up a wheel of 18 chips with what I had (not anticipating buying more), they were organized by colour on the wheel and in my notebook by collection/finish.

That was last year.  When I ended up collecting eight more bottles in the interim, I just put them in the box shown in the background and saved it all for another day.

Those bottles ended up on a different nail wheel, just painted.  Lots of work and confusion!

Now for some comparisons among other similar Sinful Colors 🙂

Great balls of fiery rainbow holo, part II

A long overdue continuation of part I, here.

L.A. Girls 3D Effects GNL 307, Sparkle Ruby

L.A. Girls 3D Effects GNL 305, Dazzling Pink

Layla Shock Pink

I painted this wheel long ago and it was none too sparkly, so I gave it a dusting off and each chip a fresh coat.

Ludurana Aurora Boreal Magnifica

NCLA Drop of Teal (why do almost all of my NCLA holos have wonky brushes? I avoid them due to this serious flaw …)

Sephora Formula X Athena

Etude House Play Nail #4 (I regret missing out on the other holos from this series — Etude House and its Korean contemporaries varnishes are my personal favourites, bar none)

Bonita Forget Me Not – not holo, but not forgotten either

NCLA Mermaid Tales

2-3 coats each

A-England Sleeping Palace

Bonita Flirty Shirley

NCLA Iridescent Dreams

Nfu-Oh 64

Sephora Formula X Aphrodite (almost bought another bottle in the clearance bin at 75% off the other day, forgetting I already have this … it leans more silvery under horrible shop lighting)

Nfu-Oh 63 (o heavenly flame)

NCLA Vacation on Mars

The Trouble with Many Varnishes

Last week, I was awakened in the middle of the night by this thought:

You forgot to include two Barry M bottles in your oceania comparison.

[One reason is that they’re housed on their own floor in the varnish condo — all Brit nationals (Barry M, Nails Inc., Illamasqua, Butter London, Models Own, Eyeko, Rococo Nail Apparel) live squeezed together in harmony there, lol]

So here they are, better late than never, with Korean and Canadian buddies plucked during my intensive organizational spurt this past weekend.

Barry M Aquarium Collection Arabian, Barry M Aquarium Collection Pacific, Etude House Play Forest Aurora Collection 379, Joe Fresh Peacock/Vert Paon

Two coats each.

I was disappointed by both Barry M bottles — coverage was not smooth, to put it euphemistically.

Arabian, far left, was the worse of the two — I reluctantly edited the larger bumps and clumps from the chip.

Etude House never fails to deliver — I’m slowly but surely collecting every Forest Aurora member.  Even the ones I hadn’t originally wanted based on stock photos turned out marvelously impressive in real life.

Just look at Joe Fresh Peacock — this one I actually find prettier on the chip than in the bottle, for once.

A la Essie Dive Bar, sans purple element, but not lacking in the least …

Comparisons: Essie Spring 2016 Lounge Lover

I went about creating this post rather cinematically, albeit without the luxury of a lighting budget + skilled technicians 🙂

It was kind of cool to do things out of order (confusing even myself in the process), then having it all pan out in the end.

SONY DSC

The titles 🙂

Last night, I developed the concept around the main actors and chose the supporting roles and bit parts.

This morning, I wrote the script, devoted myself to hair, makeup and stage direction, while haphazardly location scouting wherever I could find (barely) sufficient light.

Then, very out of character, I swiftly and decisively chose the set: my March Birchbox, gift from a thoughtful friend.

Scene One:  Essie Poolside Service, Nails Inc. Green Park, Kiko 346, RBL The Mosses Mar

All, 2x

Scene Two:  Kiko 347, Essie Off Tropic, Nails Inc. Bruton Mews, RBL Recycle

All, 2x

Nails Inc. Bruton Mews is jelly-ish at first coat, a la Nars Zulu.  She’s wearing two here.

The bridge between the two scenes:

Deborah Lippmann Girls – Hannah, Floss Gloss Faded, ChG Take a Hike, RBL Orbis Non Sufficit

All, 2x.

Hannah, third from left, is much sheerer than her sisters at the first coat.

She’s cushy and crelly, while Floss Gloss Faded (fourth from left) is darker and opaque at one coat (but I gave her two).

The cast thus far, from left:

Essie – Poolside Service

Nails Inc. – Green Park

Kiko 346

RBL The Mosses Mar

DL Girls – Hannah

Floss Gloss – Faded

China Glaze – Take a Hike

RBL Orbis Non Sufficit

Kiko 347

Essie – Off Tropic

Nails Inc. – Bruton Mews

RBL Recycle

My original intent was to sandwich the two principal actors and their scenes with a couple of doppelganger Scherer CQ varnishes:  Corduroy and Slate.

Above:

1 – Scherer CQ Corduroy, 3x – thin first coat, then load brush for *each stroke* on 2nd and 3rd coats

2 – Essie Poolside Service, 2x

3 – Nails Inc. Green Park, 2x

4 – Kiko 346, 2x

5 – RBL The Mosses Mar, 2x

However, Slate’s agent informed that she was temporarily indisposed and rained in at the varnish warehouse.

So I called on another readily available drugstore varnish to read for Slate on the tail end:  Sinful Colors Calypso.

Calypso leans bluer than Slate, and is opaque at one coat.

1 – China Glaze Take a Hike, 2x

2 – RBL Orbis Non Sufficit, 2x

3 – Kiko 347, 2x

4 – Essie Off Tropic, 2x

5 – Nails Inc. Bruton Mews, 2x

6 – RBL Recycle, 2x

7 – Sinful Colors Calypso, 1x

Essie Poolside Service is second from left, starting from greens.

Essie Off Tropic is fourth from right, starting from greens.

Brown monkey-man holos:  paparazzi 🙂

Great balls of fiery rainbow holo – part I

Guerlain Violet Sparkle, DL Teleportation, Jade Aurora, Color Club Cloud Nine, DL Spectrum

Layla Red Taboo, Bonita Do the Flamingo

China Glaze TTYL, Jade Sunset, China Glaze TMI

China Glaze 2NITE, A-England Dancing with Nureyev, L.A. Girl GNL306 Brilliant Blue

Impala Realize Tudo, China Glaze DV8, Jade Diamond Twist, L.A. Girl GNL303 Teal Dimension, Bonita Mo’ Money

Jade Twist is not actually holographic:  it’s a sheer multichrome that struts its stuff best over dark varnishes.

These Bonita bottles are only USD $1.50!

All 2x

Done late last year … upcoming are the 2016 additions!

New in: a full parcel stacked three rows high

I spent the entire Friday (aka Black Friday) following U.S. Thanksgiving hovering over my computer at intervals, leisurely adding varnish after varnish to my cart on the Ninja Polish site, then meticulously editing, until I ended up with this:

Nfu-Oh 37, 40, 46, 51, 56, 59

Nfu-Oh Aqua Base (for holographic varnishes), 62, 63, 64

Layla 11 Shock Pink

I didn’t order as many Nfu-Oh holos as I would have liked, since I was skittish about duds.

These three, however, are a trio of winners.  Lots of magic holo fairy dust in those bottles …

Hits Meninas Superpoderosas/Powerpuff Girls Docinho

Layla Ceramic Effect CE 56 – a really wow warmer-leaning green with a dusting of pale sheen.  Have a hunch I’m gonna really like this one…

Ludurana Aurora Boreal Magnifica – a perfumed aqua blue holo

Ludurana Aurora Boreal Emocionante – a perfumed crazy multichrome

Layla Ceramic Effect CE 63 – Chocolate Truffle.  I’ve wanted this one forever, sight unseen.

It’s better than my wildest dreams … more multichrome and faceted than I had imagined, better than OPI Teas-y Does It and the Nubar Chocolate series combined … and that’s not having been let out of the bottle yet 🙂

Tristam, Sleeping Palace, Guinevere, Galahad

Red Show 06, 07, 09 … these are even more incredible than I had anticipated.

New Prism 06 Teleportation, Top for Darks 603, Top for Darks 608

Don’t Tell Mademoiselle!

Meet Me at Coral Island

The Pinky & The Brain

Fred Said Red

Bloody Mary to Go

Robert’s Red Ford

Hello Kitty Lemon Pie Kit: Mint, Gum, Melon

Hello Kitty Apple Pie Kit:  Sweet, Candy, Apple

Hello Kitty Blueberry Pie Kit:  Blueberry, Plum, Fizzy

Fizzy leaked some gunky glue-like stuff onto herself and Blueberry.

All three bottles are otherwise clean and open fine.

I’m so weary of scrubbing up bottles that I left these as is :/

Copper Pot, Indigo, Coffee Love, Magic Flow

I put these together as my Viva El Salvador! group, since indigo and coffee used to be major exports until they were seemingly outshone by the maras.

Color-Changing Garnet, Mystic Glacier, Divinity

My chosen gifts with purchase 🙂  Divinity has an even better reputation than Clarins 230!

Lightshow, Nonfat Soy Half Caff, Leotard Optional, Glimmer More, Pink Platinum

I also bought yet another backup of SOPI Metro Chic, since who knows when we’ll see these old bottles again?

This was a mid-week discount retailer pick-me-up whilst awaiting the brick o’ varnish that arrived at my doorstep today. 🙂

Rich girl, poor girl: chance Sinful Colors juxtaposition, a certain Dior 2013 duo?

Dior-Summer-2013-Bird-of-Paradise-Makeup-Collection-cover

Dior Summer 2013 Bird of Paradise collection, 001 Samba nail duo, $29 USD

Dior dupes

Sinful Shine and Sinful Colors, discovered randomly thrown together in an uncorresponding Sinful Colors display, $3 and $2 USD each

Whenever I find myself in relatively stable financial condition, I become nostalgic and start to reminisce over my unfulfilled varnish yearnings of economically lean years past.

In Summer 2013, I wasn’t *that* broke, yet while the Dior 001 Samba duo was still available at a reasonable-for-a-luxury-brand price, I was content to simply window shop and procrastinate staking my claim.  Wasn’t too wild about that green (402), and I couldn’t make up my mind about whether I preferred to save my shekels for Chanel Azure… so I ended up with neither.

Whilst on a series of drugstore sprees last week, filling (subjective) gaps and (perceived) holes in my varnish collection, I was instantly reminded of the Dior Samba duo when I saw these two in tandem.

Better for me, as I prefer everything about Rendezvous to its Dior 402 counterpart, and since I already own an abundance of Palm Breezy-type shades, there’s no compelling reason to spring for something obsolete and pricier a la Dior 794 or Chanel Azure.

Sinful Shine Rendezvous has long disappeared from drugstores.  This was the lone bottle on shelf, and the only one I’ve seen this year!
